A triathlon wetsuit should do three things well: help you hold a better body position in the water, allow unrestricted shoulder movement, and fit securely enough to limit water entry without restricting breathing.

Which 2XU wetsuit level should you choose?

Level Best for 2XU range
Beginner / All-rounder First triathlon, sprint racing, open-water confidence Propel:1
Intermediate Regular racing, stronger swimmers wanting more flexibility and buoyancy tuning Propel:2
Advanced Experienced athletes focused on premium race performance Propel Pro

How should a triathlon wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should feel snug but should not restrict breathing or shoulder movement. 2XU advises that the suit should sit high enough in the crotch to avoid pulling across the shoulders, with the legs finishing roughly three-quarters down the shin. The neck should feel secure without bunching or choking.

How to choose your size

Use both height and weight first, then confirm chest and waist measurements. If you sit between two sizes, fit preference, torso length and shoulder mobility matter. A correctly fitted wetsuit will usually feel tighter dry and relax slightly once wet.

Propel:1 vs Propel:2

Propel:1 is the simpler all-round option for aspiring triathletes and open-water swimmers. It uses buoyant Yamamoto neoprene, hydrodynamic coating and 2XU's Rollbar technology to support body position and rotation.

Propel:2 is aimed at the more progressive swimmer, with more advanced buoyancy and flexibility tuning for athletes who want a more performance-focused race suit.

What should a beginner buy?

For a first triathlon or an athlete who wants a versatile training-and-race wetsuit, the Propel:1 is the most logical starting point.

What should an experienced athlete buy?

If you race regularly and are looking for more refined buoyancy, flexibility and race performance, move up the 2XU wetsuit ladder rather than simply buying a tighter suit.

How to put on a wetsuit without damaging it

  • Keep fingernails away from the smooth neoprene surface.
  • Work the suit gradually up the legs before pulling hard at the shoulders.
  • Make sure the crotch is seated high before putting the arms fully into place.
  • Use the supplied gloves if provided, or use the pads of your fingers rather than your nails.
