The On Cloud 6 right for walking and everyday wear

On Cloud 6 Review: Is It the Best On Shoe for Walking & Everyday Wear?

The On Cloud 6 may have running in its DNA, but that is no longer really the point. We look at where this lightweight everyday shoe fits, what has changed from the Cloud 5, and whether it deserves a place in your daily rotation.

Spend enough time around runners and you start to notice something interesting: some of the shoes we see most often are not actually being worn for running.

They are at airports. In offices. On school runs. Walking through shopping centres. Under jeans on a Saturday morning.

The On Cloud 6 has become one of those shoes.

And with the Cloud 6, On appears to understand exactly what the model has become.

This is not positioned as a high-mileage running shoe. On describes the Cloud 6 as its all-day signature shoe, designed around everyday movement, comfort and easy wear. It retains the familiar CloudTec® cushioning and Speedboard® associated with the Cloud family, but the emphasis here is very clearly on life away from your training plan.

That distinction matters, because judged as a running shoe, the Cloud 6 can seem slightly confusing.

Judged as an everyday shoe, it starts to make considerably more sense.

So, what exactly is the On Cloud 6?

The Cloud 6 is the latest version of the shoe that helped make On recognisable well beyond the running community.

It still has the clean upper, distinctive CloudTec® pods and relatively low-profile silhouette that define the range. Underfoot is On's Zero-Gravity CloudTec® cushioning, paired with a Speedboard® designed to add structure and help the foot move smoothly through each step.

Both the men's and women's versions have an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop. On lists the men's shoe at 267 g and the women's at 216 g.

Those numbers tell you quite a lot about the Cloud 6.

It is light.

It isn't built around a huge stack of soft foam.

And it feels quite different from the increasingly tall, highly cushioned shoes that dominate much of the modern running market.

For everyday use, that can be a strength.

What changed from the Cloud 5?

At first glance, not much.

That is intentional.

The Cloud 6 is an evolution rather than a complete redesign. On has kept the basic identity of the shoe while changing some of the details that affect how easy and comfortable it is to wear.

There is a new sockliner, a wider opening to make stepping into the shoe easier, revised heel construction and updated geometry through the shoe's shape and structure. On also describes the fit as broader and more inclusive than before.

Independent laboratory measurements have also found the Cloud 6 slightly wider than the average walking shoe tested and noticeably more accommodating than the Cloud 5, although it still falls short of what we would consider a true wide-fitting shoe.

So if the Cloud 5 always felt just a little restrictive, the Cloud 6 is worth trying again.

If you already loved the Cloud 5, don't expect an entirely different shoe.

That wasn't really the brief.

What does the Cloud 6 feel like underfoot?

This is where expectations are important.

The name Cloud can create the impression that this should be an exceptionally soft shoe. It isn't.

The Cloud 6 has cushioning, but the experience is more light, controlled and relatively grounded than deep and plush.

Independent laboratory testing has found its heel shock absorption slightly below the average of the walking shoes tested, with moderate rather than particularly springy energy return. In practice, that helps explain why the Cloud 6 feels easy and natural for daily movement without giving you the deeply cushioned sensation of some larger modern shoes.

That isn't necessarily a criticism.

Not everybody wants to spend the day on a large platform of foam.

For commuting, travelling, moving through town or simply having one smart-looking shoe you can wear across most of your day, the Cloud 6's relatively uncomplicated ride is part of its appeal.

Is the On Cloud 6 good for walking?

Yes — with one qualification.

For general walking, travel and everyday movement, the Cloud 6 makes a very convincing case.

It is light, easy to get on and off, relatively flexible and unobtrusive on foot. Independent testing has rated it particularly strongly for travel, and its more accommodating fit is a welcome improvement for daily use.

But there is a difference between walking throughout your day and spending an entire day standing or walking on hard surfaces.

If your job keeps you on your feet for eight or ten hours, or your first priority is maximum underfoot cushioning, there are softer options in On's range.

The Cloudtilt is the obvious example. On specifically engineered the Cloudtilt around walking, using CloudTec Phase™ and a more cushioned midsole to create smoother transitions underfoot. Independent testing of the Cloud 6 also points towards the Cloudtilt for people wanting greater cushioning and support during prolonged periods on their feet.

Think of it this way:

The Cloud 6 is the lighter, cleaner, more minimal everyday option.

The Cloudtilt is the more deliberately cushioned walking option.

Neither is automatically better. They solve slightly different problems.

Can you run in the On Cloud 6?

This is probably the most important question to answer properly.

The Cloud 6 carries the On name and technology many runners recognise, but we would not choose it as a regular running trainer.

That is also consistent with how On now positions the shoe. The Cloud 6 sits in its all-day category rather than being presented as one of the brand's dedicated road-running models.

If your goal is regular road mileage, there are better choices within the On range.

A runner looking for more structured everyday support could look towards the Cloudrunner. Someone wanting a dedicated running experience should choose from On's road-running range according to the cushioning, stability and ride they prefer.

The important point is not that the Cloud 6 is somehow incapable of moving quickly.

It is that there is little reason to compromise when On makes shoes specifically for running.

The Cloud 6 is better allowed to do what it does best.

And what about the gym?

Again, there is a better tool for that job.

The Cloud X 5 is designed specifically around training. It uses training-optimised CloudTec® cushioning, Helion™ superfoam and a more flexible platform designed to provide stability during multidirectional movement. On has also engineered the heel and outsole around the demands of gym-based training.

The Cloud 6 is the shoe we would reach for on the way to the gym.

The Cloud X 5 is the shoe we would be more likely to train in.

That is a useful distinction when two shoes can look broadly similar from a distance.

How does the Cloud 6 fit?

For most people, starting with your normal On size makes sense.

On describes the current women's Cloud 6 as true to size, while independent fit data on the model also points towards a generally true-to-size fit.

The bigger change is around volume.

The wider opening makes the Cloud 6 easier to step into, and the forefoot feels less restrictive than the previous generation. The toe box is reasonably accommodating for a standard-width shoe without becoming loose or shapeless.

People with genuinely wide feet should still try the shoe rather than assuming that “broader fit” means “wide fit”.

It doesn't.

Men's vs Women's Cloud 6

The fundamental concept is the same in both versions.

Both use an 8 mm drop, Zero-Gravity CloudTec® cushioning, a Speedboard®, the revised sockliner, wider opening and updated geometry.

The main specification difference is weight: On lists the men's Cloud 6 at 267 g and the women's at 216 g.

Beyond that, the decision should be driven by fit rather than the number on the scale.

A shoe can have excellent specifications and still be the wrong shape for your foot.

Trying it remains the best test.

There is also a sustainability detail worth knowing

The Cloud 6's Zero-Gravity midsole foam is now produced using what On calls bio-attributed materials. According to On, renewable feedstocks used in the process can include materials such as waste cooking oil through an ISCC+ certified supply chain.

It doesn't change how you should choose the shoe, but it is a meaningful part of the engineering update rather than simply a colour or styling change.

Who is the Cloud 6 really for?

The Cloud 6 makes the most sense for someone who wants one light, understated shoe that can move comfortably between different parts of everyday life.

It works particularly well for travel, commuting, casual walking, weekends and the kind of day where you may be on your feet regularly without necessarily walking huge distances.

It also suits someone who likes an athletic shoe but doesn't necessarily want to look as though they have just stepped off the start line of a marathon.

Where we would look elsewhere is more important.

If you want maximum cushioning for long days standing on hard floors, consider a more cushioned walking shoe such as the Cloudtilt.

If you are buying primarily for running, choose a dedicated On running model.

If gym and functional training are your priority, the Cloud X 5 makes more sense.

That honesty is important.

A shoe doesn't have to be good at everything to be a very good shoe.

The verdict

The Cloud 6 succeeds because On hasn't tried to turn it into something it isn't.

It remains recognisably a Cloud: light, clean, easy to wear and distinctive without becoming overly technical.

The updates from the Cloud 5 aren't dramatic, but the wider opening, improved heel construction, new sockliner and more accommodating fit make the shoe easier to live with.

Is it the softest On shoe for walking?

No.

Is it the On shoe we would choose for regular running?

Also no.

But if the question is whether the Cloud 6 is one of On's most versatile shoes for travel, commuting and everyday wear, the answer is much easier.

Yes.

And perhaps that is the reason the Cloud has become such a familiar sight well beyond the running route.

Sometimes the best shoe isn't the one designed for your hardest session.

It's the one you keep reaching for when the session is over.
